
Becoming a Mentor
Mentoring is a deeply rewarding experience, offering the opportunity to make a lasting impact on a young person’s life. Many youth in Cochise County face significant challenges, such as growing up in single-parent homes, group or foster care, or dealing with the incarceration of a parent. Mentoring Cochise Kids provides these youth with guidance, support, and positive role models to help them navigate life’s obstacles and build brighter futures.
Who Can Be a Mentor?
To become a mentor with Mentoring Cochise Kids, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Possess a valid social security card.
- Successfully pass a state-required background check.
- Have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance if driving.
- Have no DUI citations within the past 2 years.
- Have no history of violent crime or crimes against children.
- Have no charges related to the use or distribution of illegal drugs within the past 2 years.
What’s Expected of You?
As a mentor, your commitment includes:
- Meet with your mentees weekly or at least three times per month on school grounds during designated mentoring sessions.
- Notifying us at least 24 hours in advance if you are unable to attend a scheduled session.
- Completing regular progress reports and forms to track your mentees’ development throughout the program.
The Mentor Process
We’ve outlined a clear, step-by-step process for becoming a mentor to ensure both you and your mentees have a successful experience:
- Review the Information: Take time to review all the details on this website to fully understand the program’s expectations and requirements.
- Submit Your Application: Complete and submit the Mentoring Cochise Kids Application along with the names of four references.
- Personal Interview: If you wish to proceed after reviewing the information, a staff member will contact you to schedule a personal interview and discuss your fit for the program.
- Attend Orientation/Training: Once we receive your application, you’ll be invited to attend a required orientation and training session. If you can’t attend, we will arrange a private meeting to ensure you’re fully prepared.
- Sign Required Forms: After the interview, you’ll be asked to complete and sign the necessary forms to move forward.
Mentor Matching: If accepted, we will match you with two children who are eager to have a mentor. Once matched, you’ll begin your mentorship journey!
